Locked out on a holiday: what to expect

Holidays are when keys get left at a relative's house, cars get packed with the keys inside, and spare keys turn out to be with someone who's away.

Calling on a holiday

Lines are open Monday through Sunday. On a holiday, ask dispatch up front whether the estimate differs from a normal day, and how long it's likely to take to get someone out.

Common holiday calls

  • Keys locked in the car while loading for a trip
  • House keys left with a family member out of town
  • Rental or guest house lockouts
  • Broken keys in cold-morning locks

Three ways to avoid one

  1. Leave a spare with a neighbor you trust before you travel.
  2. Check you have house keys before closing the door with the luggage outside.
  3. If you host guests, consider a keypad deadbolt so you can share a code instead of a key.

If it happens

Stay somewhere safe, have ID ready, and call 818-531-9698. The emergency page explains the process.

Talk to dispatch

Tell dispatch the cross streets, the kind of lock and what went wrong. You'll hear an approximate estimate before a locksmith is sent.
